GENERAL OBJECTIVES TO THE COURSE

This is a one and half year course.

By the end of the course learners should be able to;

  • Relate different issues in the medical field to counseling e.g. pharmacology, medical conditions, palliative care etc.
  • Identify the different aspects of health and community psychology
  • Identify and work with patients/ clients with abnormal behavior for behavior modification
  • Understand the ethical considerations in counseling and incorporate them in their practice
  • Generate new knowledge by conducting research study in an area of interest related to the medical set-up
  • Offer guidance and counseling services to patients e.g. in- patients, out-patients, and in at home (home- based counselling)

SEMESTER TWO

DMHC 2808: Group counseling
DMHC 2809: Professional studies
DMHC 2810: HIV/AIDS
DMHC 2811: Sociology of family
DMHC 2812: Community psychology and Counseling
DMHC 2813: Health psychology
DMHC 2814: Human anatomy & physiology

SEMESTER THREE
DMHC 2815: Abnormal behavior & modification
DMHC 2816: Pharmacology in counseling
DMHC 2817: Palliative care and counseling
DMHC 2818: Counseling for medical conditions
DMHC 2819: Project in clinical set up
DMHC 2820: Practicum in a clinical set up

 

  • Minimum qualifications are KCSE C- or KCE Div. 2 or the equivalent
  • Certificate in Community development, Social development, Social work, Community Health, Counseling and Psychology.
  • Course open to Beginners, Development workers, Social workers, Project managers and Fresh students
