And you thought the World Cup was only in South Africa…
Railways Club came to a stand still on Friday June 25, 2010 for the greatest KISWCD Sports Day. Hate it or like it, the South Africa’s vuvuzelas carried the day as winners blew them in unique ways to celebrate their victory in various sports events! At least Paul the Octopus had not predicated the winner. This gave confidence for a win to all the big five : Lions (Social Work, Human Resource and Counseling departments), Tigers (Social Development, Early Childhood and Advanced Diploma departments), Buffaloes (Community Health and HIV/AIDs department) Rhinos ,(Community Development and Project Planning department) and Elephants (KISWCD staff). This was an event everyone was waiting as Shakira’s , Waka Waka went into air for warm ups for both staff and students who had dressed brightly colored sports gear.
This year’s event came with lots of surprises. The sheer quality of Community Development performance in all games deserved a brag. The players were like young wild boars. “We played very well, in all the games and we deserve the Director’s trophy,” a student from the department said in an interview after the matches.
In an intense encounter with CH department in final male football, CD broke CH resistance in the last minute with a crashing kick from a corner to set up a new record of beating a strong CH team that won last year. ‘We did not have courage and conviction to fully play our game this time’ acclaimed a CH defender. SW department carried the day for women football.
SD mourned defeat after being crashed 3 -0 in volleyball women by CH. SD were also riding on cloud nine after they handled Lions to 3-1 to retain the Male volleyball cup.
It was simply a brilliant act after the KISWCD staff were beaten by students in both men and women relay games. ‘It is so special to have won relay against our own staff’, said a student. It all needed great team work and individual brilliance to bring down the Elephants. , ‘We concede defeat, we lost on line. The students were really good. They learnt our weakness- unfitness’ said Mr. Kipsang- KISCWD librarian.
The day finally came to an end with fun games taking the center stage. They included eating and dancing competitions as well as tug of war between staff and students. Definitely KISWCD staff lost!
At the end of the day the trophies were given to the winning teams. Community Development Department carried the day by receiving the Director’s Trophy. This was a very successful event that allowed the students to interact with the staff and with each other. It was an indication of the commitment that the institution has to the wellbeing of the students and staff. The event ended at 6.30 pm! Thanks to the organizing team!
